Janice Deul: Heritage & Identity
The opening lecture of Textile Inspiration Day 2026 will be delivered by Leiden-based fashion critic and opinion writer Janice Deul. In her talk, she explores the significance of textiles in relation to heritage and identity. Drawing on her personal background, Janice takes the audience on a journey through a story of expression and vitality.
In her lecture, she demonstrates how clothing and textiles can express where you come from and what that reveals about who you are. She reflects on the question of what truly makes you feel comfortable and how clothing can help communicate your identity. At the same time, she addresses the thin line between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation: when does inspiration and exchange enrich us, and when does it become problematic?
Using examples such as the well-known textile company Vlisco—whose fabrics are often seen as “typically African,” although they are produced in Brabant—she challenges ideas about authenticity, origin, and cultural representation. What do we consider “authentic,” and how do these assumptions come into being?
Finally, Janice invites the audience to imagine: how much richer would our streetscapes be if we expressed our cultural identities more boldly through clothing?
A lecture that inspires, challenges, and provokes reflection.

Janice was co-curator of Voices of Fashion – Black Couture, Beauty & Styles (Centraal Museum, Utrecht), creative director of Knowing Cotton Otherwise (Fashion for Good Museum, Amsterdam), wrote the essay Black Fashion Matters for the exhibition Africa’s Fashion Diaspora (FIT Museum, New York), and served on the advisory committee for the exhibition Oceanista: Fashion & Sea, on view until 12 April at the Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam.

De eerste lezing van Textile Inspiration Day 2026 wordt verzorgd door de Leidse fashion critic en opinieschrijver Janice Deul. In haar lezing verkent zij de betekenis van textiel in relatie tot erfgoed en identiteit. Vanuit haar persoonlijke achtergrond neemt Janice het publiek mee in een verhaal over expressie en vitaliteit.
In haar lezing laat zij zien hoe je via kleding en textiel kunt tonen waar je vandaan komt en wat dat zegt over wie je bent. Ze staat stil bij de vraag waar je je werkelijk comfortabel bij voelt en hoe kleding kan bijdragen aan het uitdragen van je identiteit. Tegelijkertijd bespreekt ze de dunne scheidslijn tussen culturele toe-eigening en culturele waardering: wanneer is er sprake van inspiratie en uitwisseling, en wanneer wordt het problematisch?
Aan de hand van voorbeelden, zoals het bekende textielbedrijf Vlisco – waarvan de stoffen vaak als ‘typisch Afrikaans’ worden gezien, terwijl deze in Brabant worden geproduceerd – bevraagt zij ideeën over authenticiteit, herkomst en culturele beeldvorming. Wat beschouwen we als ‘echt’, en hoe ontstaan die aannames?
Tot slot nodigt Janice uit tot verbeelding: hoeveel rijker zou het straatbeeld zijn als we onze culturele identiteit sterker zouden uitdragen via kledij?
Een lezing die inspireert, schuurt en aanzet tot nadenken.
