24H Weefmarathon door Stichting Leidse Deken
During Textile Inspiration Day, the Stichting Leidse Deken literally puts the craft of weaving in the spotlight. At Kunsthuizen, located at Nieuwstraat 35, weavers from Stichting Leidse Deken will work on blankets for 24 hours straight: starting on 13 March at 5:00 PM and finishing on 14 March at 5:00 PM. Passers-by are invited to watch the process up close.
The blankets are woven from 100% Dutch wool sourced from the Texel sheep breed (Texelaar). In collaboration with local shearers, the wool has been collected in the Leiden region. In doing so, Stichting Leidse Deken contributes to the renewed appreciation of Dutch wool, a material that nowadays is often treated as waste.
Through this initiative, Stichting Leidse Deken brings Leiden’s illustrious textile past back to life. Did you know that well into the 19th century, Leiden’s blanket factories were among the city’s most important employers?

Tijdens de Textile Inspiration Day zet de Stichting Leidse Deken het ambacht van het weven letterlijk in de etalage. Bij Kunsthuizen aan de Nieuwstraat 35 werken wevers van Leidse Deken 24 uur lang aan dekens: start 13 maart om 17.00 uur, einde 14 maart om 17.00 u. Voorbijgangers kunnen het van dichtbij volgen.
De dekens worden geweven met 100% Nederlandse wol afkomstig van het schapenras Texelaar. De wol is in samenwerking met lokale scheerders verzameld in de Leidse regio. Hiermee draagt Leidse Deken bij aan de herwaardering van Nederlandse wol, een materiaal dat tegenwoordig vaak een afvalproduct is.
De Stichting Leidse Deken laat zo het roemrijke textielverleden van Leiden weer tot bloei komen. Want wist je dat tot ver in de 19e eeuw de Leidse dekenfabrieken tot de belangrijkste werkgevers van de stad behoorden?
